Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) is a public, technology, and research university situated at Kalyanpur, a Kanpur satellite town, Uttar Pradesh. Established under Kanpur-Indo American Programme – KIAP, the institute was recognized as an Institute of National Importance under the Institutes of Technology Act by the Government of India. IIT Kanpur is also recognized as the first Indian Institute to offer Computer Science education.

The university holds the 350th rank in Q.S. World University Rankings for 2021; also, it was 25th among the BRICS nations in 2019. Programmes at IIT KANPUR

Under-Graduate Programme

The U.G. Programme’s goals at IIT Kanpur are to provide the highest level of education in technology and science and produce competent, creative, and imaginative engineers and scientists. They promote a spirit of free and objective inquiry and knowledge development in different disciplines. They also focus on making highly skilled technologists and scientists with well-honed managerial and entrepreneurial skills have team spirit and leadership qualities.

Bachelor of Technology (BTech) – This is a 4-year programme where students get admitted through JEE ADVANCED, held every year among the top 2.5 lakhs students qualifying JEE MAINS. Departments that offer this degree are Aerospace Engineering (A.E.), Biological Sciences and Bio-Engineering (BSBE), Chemical Engineering (CHE), Civil Engineering (C.E.), Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Electrical Engineering (E.E.), Mechanical Engineering (M.E.), Material Science and Engineering (MSE). As per Academic Affairs, the total intake for the year 2021 is 935.

Bachelor of Science (BS) – This is a 4-year programme where students get admitted through JEE ADVANCED, held every year among the top 2.5 lakhs students who qualified JEE MAINS. Departments that offer this degree are Chemistry (CHM), Earth Sciences (E.S.), Economics (ECO), Mathematics and Scientific Computing (MTH), Physics (PHY). As per Academic Affairs, the total intake for the year 2021 is 257.

IIT Kanpur provides a great deal of flexibility in its academic structure.

Branch Change – A B Tech/B.S. students may choose to apply for a change to a B Tech/B.S. program in any other discipline after the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th semester. The student should have acquired the minimum passing grade in each course he has undertaken in his first year on campus.

Double Major – It is a five-year programme where a student can get a bachelor’s degree in two departments. The first is in the parent department. The second major is in the department where students get admitted after the 4th semester.

Dual Degree – It is a five-year programme awarding a student a bachelor and a Master’s degree. It has three categories:

Category A: Both degrees are in the same discipline.

Category B: This is a two-discipline programme where the Master’s degree is in a different discipline. The Bachelor’s degree is in the parent department.

Category C: In this case, the Master’s degree in MBA and the Bachelor’s degree are in the parent discipline.

Minor – It is a specialization within a discipline other than the parent department.

Fees – 1.37 lacs/semester

Post-Graduate Programme

The goals of the postgraduate programmes at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur are:- the development of scientific and engineering human resources of the highest quality, to cater to the needs of industry, R & D organizations, and educational institutions, a deep understanding of the area of specialization, a broad grip of the fundamental principles of the sciences and scientific methods, a creative ability to solve problems, and a capacity to learn continually and interact with multidisciplinary groups.

The institute offers a Master’s degree and a Ph.D. degree in sciences, technology, design, and management. The admission is granted based on GATE score or their marks in U.G. and P.G. part of the degree.

IIT Kanpur Facilities

IIT Kanpur offers various facilities to students. They are as follows: –

• Banking Facilities: IIT Kanpur has bank branches and ATMs of State Bank of India, Union Bank of India, and ICICI Bank.
• Computer Centre: IIT Kanpur caters to the computing needs of faculty, staff, and students for their research and teaching. It is a fully air-conditioned chamber with some state-of-the-art servers, high-end Linux and Windows Labs, and application software.
• Health Centre: The on-campus Health Centre of IIT Kanpur has a clinical lab, ECG facility, Pathology lab, home-therapy and physiotherapy sessions, a radiology(X-ray) unit, 30-bed indoor room, and a pharmacy.
• P.K. Kelkar Library: Housed with all modern amenities, the library has more than 2,50,000 volumes, subscriptions to about 2000 periodicals, and more than 10,000 online journals. It is amongst the best libraries in India.
• Railway Reservation Counter: Located near the IIT Kanpur main gate, the counter offers railway concession vouchers. These vouchers are for the students travelling in sleeper class to their respective home-towns.
• Facilities in sports: IIT Kanpur has courts for Basketball, Badminton, Lawn tennis, Football ground, Cricket ground, Gym, Wall climbing, Swimming pool.
• Shopping Complex: The shopping complex at IIT Kanpur is a host of stores for students’ general needs like a chemist, hairdresser, dry cleaner, bakery, sweets shop, stationery stores, restaurant, electrician, tailor, shoe store, and cycle sales, and repairs shop. The complex also has a post office, courier service, and telecom center.
• Visitor’s Hostel: Housed in a centrally located, well-maintained building, the Visitors’ Hostel provides boarding and lodging facilities for institute guests, visitors, newly appointed faculty, parents of students, delegates, and participants attending various conferences, seminars, symposia, and workshops.

IIT Kanpur Scholarships

IIT Kanpur offers various scholarships for its students. Below are the details regarding the scholarships:

1. Merit-cum-means Scholarship:

• A pocket allowance of Rs. 1000 pm and full tuition waiver for students during the program duration. Maintaining a minimum CPI of 6.5 is a must for the recipient.
• While applying for this scholarship, a student must submit their parental income certificate only.
• This scholarship is not applicable for SC/ST category students.

2. INSPIRE Scholarship:

• IIT Kanpur offers an annual scholarship of Rs.30,000 per semester and a research grant of Rs.20,000.This scholarship is only for B.S programmes students with AIR 10,000 as per the Common Merit List in Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry departments.
• Students must submit an undertaking for not getting any other scholarship to the SSPC every semester to apply for this scholarship.
• The scholarship recipients must maintain a minimum CPI of 6.0.

3. Donor Scholarship:

• The Institute gives Donor Scholarships to deserving and needy students. A total of 115 scholarships were awarded under this scholarship.
• A student must have a CPI of more than 6.0
• Total Family Annual Income should be 6.0 lacs currently.
• This scholarship is for students of all years across all the departments.

4. Free-Basic-Mess Scholarship:

• Only SC/ST category students with annual parental income less than 4.5 lakhs can avail this scholarship.
• Students receive a free basic mess bill and a pocket allowance.

5. Sport Scholarship

• Students who show their excellence in sports-related activities can avail this scholarship.
• The scholarship amount is Rs. 1,000/- per month for nine months.
